Northbound Static — The Shape of Falling | Album Cover Design

The Shape of Falling is a personal album cover design project created for Northbound Static, a fictional British alternative rock band.

The visual direction explores emotional instability, isolation and the sensation of losing control. A solitary figure stands within a vast, reflective landscape while an inverted city hangs above, creating an impossible scene in which gravity and perspective appear to collapse.

The suspended architecture acts as a metaphor for a world that no longer feels stable, while the figure’s reflection introduces themes of identity, introspection and personal transformation. The composition deliberately leaves the moment unresolved: the city may be falling, floating or gradually disappearing.

A dark, desaturated palette was combined with red and cyan chromatic displacement to create tension and a distorted sense of reality. Atmospheric clouds, subtle grain and distressed textures reinforce the raw, cinematic character associated with modern alternative rock.

Minimal, widely spaced typography balances the visual complexity of the artwork and maintains clarity at smaller sizes, making the cover suitable for streaming platforms, vinyl packaging and promotional applications.
